Summary

With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting everyday life, we thank you for your continued support. Right now Kampala Music School (KMS) faces new challenges due to the impact of Lockdown and social distancing. The music school building is shut and we have had to take lessons online where possible. However, this is challenging due to network and technology challenges. Hence <10% of students are accessing lessons impacting greatly on our income and ability to pay staff and maintain KMS.

Challenge

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the future has never felt so unpredictable. These are challenging times for us all, and the impact of lockdown and social distancing on Kampala Music School (KMS) is great. Our building is closed and we are unable to conduct face-to-face lessons or continue our outreach into schools. Whilst we are marketing on-line lessons the uptake has been small with <10% of students participating. Thus our income has reduced greatly yet we still have to sustain our workforce.

Solution

This project will help to meet the shortfall that KMS is experiencing at present and to ensure that KMS is still in a position to provide services once the lockdown and other restrictions are eased. There are 10 permanent staff and 4 heads of departments, and the project will help us to be able to retain sustain our workforce and other running costs which have had to be reduced to an overall 50% for the coming months. Essential internet access is also costly, but essential for online lessons.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of this project is that KMS will continue to be able to deliver quality music lessons and be the Centre for classical music in Uganda. The current crisis makes it difficult to continue to serve the community fully and therefore our impact is greatly reduced. However we still strive to develop talent and change the lives of individuals in Uganda through music development over the coming years. Without this project KMS is in danger of not being sustainable in the long-term.
