The future of farming families lies in trees

By Maria Varela | Programme leader

The future of farming families and the planet is in the trees

Dear Donors,

We are very grateful for your continued support to the farming families, who are the protagonists of their own future.

The families continue to practice what they have learned during the years of direct impact of the Pachamama Raymi methodology; the future of their family and the planet is in the trees.

In March, we expanded the scope of the Carbon Credits Pre-Feasibility Study.

  • These months have been of continuous study on the eligibility of our projects to certify carbon credits, based on the Verra and Plan Vivo standards; there are many criteria to meet and we are taking our first steps to validate the existing 2,166 hectares.
  • This is a win-win relationship for the 52 farming communities and for the planet with the capture of 248,511 tCO2-e in 26 years.

The communities have been very receptive during the geo-referencing field activity, and see this project as a great opportunity.

The farming communities have invited us to participate in their community assemblies to learn more about this project and to let us know their vision for the future and their needs.

Plan Vivo istailored to local possibilitiesforcommunity and smallholderforestry and land use projectsthatstrive to make a difference.  Itisdesigned to work in differentgeographical, socio-economic and legal contexts, and has beendeveloped in closeconsultationwithitsusers, includingprojects, Plan Vivo Certificatebuyers and otherinvitedparties.

VERRA is a standard forcertifyingcarbonemissionreductions, catalysing tangible climateactions and sustainabledevelopmentoutcomes. Verrastandards drive large-scaleinvestmenttowardshigh-impactactivitiesthataddresssome of today'smost pressing environmental and social issues.

We have also given them information on how to register their plantations with the National Forestry Service (SERFOR), a government entity that accredits them with legal ownership of their timber, mushroom products, resins, carbon credits, among others.

Likewise, we invite the peasant communities to carry out the procedures regarding the ownership of their land, an indispensable requirement for accrediting ownership of this type of project.

It was identified that the public data available is up to date until 2014, presenting differences with the data presented during the georeferencing.

With this work we have expanded the possibilities for farming families to be the protagonists of their future.
