Recycle Up! Ghana (RUG) empowers young Ghanaians to tackle the country's waste challenges, through innovative youth educational and entrepreneurial programs. Recycle Up's Incubator programme is contributing to the creation of a robust circular economy in Ghana where all resources are effectively used to maximize impact thereby avoiding waste. We provide early-stage social entrepreneurs on a cohort basis with business development training and consulting to develop their social businesses.
Estimates show that Ghana's capital city, Accra, alone produces over three-thousand metric tons of plastic waste per day, and even with all the efforts by private and public waste management companies, over 70% of the plastic waste ends up in open spaces polluting the environment leading to malaria and cholera which affects the most vulnerable in society. Also, 41% of the Ghanaian population is between the ages of 15-34 years and there is more than 1.2 million unemployed youth in Ghana.
We are bridging this gap by providing entrepreneurship training, mentoring and support services to young industrious Ghanaians to start businesses that help solve pressing societal challenges. We select social entrepreneurs to go through a three-phase incubation program that helps them develop their social business ideas, prototype, test market-fit and grow their businesses. We also support social entrepreneurs to raise funds to accelerate their businesses.
We seek to create a robust circular economy in Ghana where all resources are effectively used to maximize impact thereby avoiding waste and creating jobs. We are targeting to create 10,000 jobs in the next ten years and change the attitudes of Ghanaians to waste as a valuable resource.
