MADRE partners with the Tirap Youth Trust (the Trust) in Kenya to combat the effects of climate disasters on the Ogiek community—a hunter-gatherer ethnic group with a long history of facing discrimination and eviction from their ancestral homelands. With your generosity, the Trust strengthens the leadership and capacity of young feminist climate defenders and amplifies their collective efforts to combat climate catastrophes through the Trust’s girls’ mentorship program. Last year, this transformative program educated 60 Ogiek girls on critical issues that impact their daily lives, like gender-based violence and inequality, and how these issues connect to climate disasters in Indigenous communities. Your support assisted the formation of a cohort of youth poised to lead on sustainable management of natural resources and conservation of biodiversity; supporting a healthier future for our planet
Additionally, the Trust is expanding its programming to train Ogiek youth in the importance of traditional knowledge of surrounding ecosystems and climate adaptations, sustainable practices, environmental conservation, and climate justice principles. Thank you for supporting the leadership and collective capacity of local climate defenders in Kenya.
