Identifying victims of trafficking is difficult and it has been the most challenging aspect of our work. Victims often don’t identify as “trafficked”. Most can identify when they are being forced or coerced into doing something they do not want to do or when they have been ripped off, scammed or lied to. Force, fraud and coercion are red flags for identifying human trafficking.
Knowing the story behind a situation is key to assisting an individual to identify the signs of trafficking. In many cases it is very difficult for a victim to leave and may take time for them to gain the courage to make a change. Trafficking is complex and complicated due to the power and control of the trafficker and in some cases the individual victim’s need for a way to earn a living or need for housing. Many stay for fear: fear of being deported, fear of losing their livelihood, fear of losing a relationship or family support. Every story is different and the pathway to freedom can be full of ups and downs.
Victims of human trafficking come from all walks of life, there is not one type of person who may become a victim. Some people are more vulnerable than others. Pay attention to the people around you. Hear their story. Ask questions! A victim of trafficking could be among your students, clients, patients, coworkers, neighbors, house cleaners, nail tech, waitress, or lawn care team.
