Confronting the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil

By Josymara Ribeiro de Mendonca | Project Leader

IORM in confronting the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil: More than 40K masks donated to the community.

Brazil is facing the greatest pandemic of its history and, in May of 2021 registered more than 420 thousand of Covid-19 victims. As a Third Sector Organization, the Institute Oswaldo Ribeiro de Mendonça – IORM decided to walk side by side with the community in confronting the pandemic and make history.

In the last year we dedicated to the task of produce and donate to the community 40K fabric masks to protect the vulnerable population against Coronavirus. The goal was reached after 365 days of interrupt work.

In April of 2020, the founder of IORM, Josimara Ribeiro de Mendonça, made an appeal triggering the solidarity network, engaging 291 volunteers in ten different cities: Orlândia, Guaíra, Ipuã, Miguelópolis, Sales Oliveira, Morro Agudo, São Joaquim da Barra, Ribeirão Preto, Matão and Cravinhos with the mission to manufacture the 40.000 masks. In common, everyone used their abilities and sewing machines on duty of this challenge. Josimara contracted Covid in the begging of the pandemic and realized since early stages the severity and risks caused by the virus. “We never needed each other’s as now. During my three weeks of quarantine, I’ve asked for God to enlightened me with a way that we could help in this moment and then I received a message from Dr. Mauro Tarandach, asking if IORM could produce fabric masks” tells Josimara.

The IORM set up a truly war operation. Raised awareness of the community through media. Gathered volunteers and collaborators that built a production line. The staff members of the Institute cut the fabric from the suitable mold following the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, making kits with fabric, trims and packages and from the battle GQ, the IORM center in Orlândia, they delivered these kits to the volunteers residences.

The result was 41.711 masks distributed in 12 cities to public agencies, retirement homes, schools, social projects, hospitals, people responsible for the patient services in Public Health System (SUS), people who lives in a street situation, rural communities and periphery neighborhoods of the cities

The movement made history: gained support from the churches, others Third Sector Organizations that engaged to help in the distribution of the masks to reach the vulnerable population. The campaign was important to guide and educate the community about the importance of the use of the masks – measures of mechanical control capabilities to stop the virus spreading.

To meet the IORM’s recommendations, the volunteers worn masks during the work. After manufacturing, the masks were packaged every two units before the distribution.

A huge important part of the production was designated for the students of the art, culture and sport projects offered by IORM and their respective families. The classes provided to the children, teenagers and young-adults from 7 to 17 years old are still held through the remotely way in an online platform.
