Citizenship provides belonging, a sense of identity. It provides access to education, health care, and careers. But for many children born in the mountain villages of Thailand, it is a difficult thing to acquire due to lack of knowledge, lack of education or poverty. Help us provide resources to families going through the process of applying for citizenship for their children so those children have no limitations to success.
In Thailand, there are many ethnic groups with their own languages and customs. Many of these groups live in the mountainous regions and their children are born in villages rather than hospitals. Because of this, they often lack documentation to prove they are legitimate Thai citizens.
Most families in this situation simply don't have the resources or knowledge to navigate the complicated process of registering their children to receive the rights due them as people born in the country of Thailand. This project provides legal and financial support to these families to get witnesses to government offices, pay for transportation to remote areas to register the birth of the children and advocate for the most vulnerable of the population.
Having citizenship changes lives. It makes a person eligible to attend university and graduate school, purchase land or vehicles, vote, and, most importantly, find a job that provides health care and a pension. All of these are unattainable without Thai citizenship. Having that ID card is the difference between poverty and prosperity.
