We want to thank our donors for helping us save children every day.
We want to tell you a story that inspired us this last month. Donovan´s story is like many others thanks to you, an example of a second chance to live a healthy life.
Donovan will turn three in July. People who knew him before his surgery cannot believe he is the same boy. “He looks great, ”says María Consuelo, grandmother of the small boy, "although he is not yet going to school, he already learned numbers and colors in both english and spanish."
Donovan lives in an economically underpriviledged area a few hours away from Mexico City. Both his parents work, so his grandmother takes care of him.
When Donovan was born, he seemed to be healthy, but his grandmother noticed that his breathing was strange. However, the doctors at the small, underfunded hospital where he was born said he was fine.
When he was one year old, Donovan was taken to the doctor for a stomack ache but his grandmother took the opportunity to have him examined because she was sure the boy had a breathing problem.
After several examinations, the doctor determined that Donovan had a congenital heart defect which needed surgery. Due to the level of complexity, the child had to be transfered to another public hospital which referred him to Kardias.
Donovan underwent surgery at the new Kardias Heart Center, the familly was encouraged by doctors and nurses from the team who know and understand the needs of these families with low levels of education.
Only five days after surgery, Donovan was released from the hospital, as "a new child." He sarted gaining height and weight almost immediately, it was no longer hard for him to beathe.
“The first thing he did when he arrived home was to climb on his tricycle and pedal around. Donovan loves soccer and he just received the doctors permision to play.
Donovan now lives a healthy normal life and is full of energy and a bright future.
Thanks to you, our donors, successful stories like these are possible.
