When he arrived, Duke was abandoned and on the verge of starvation. Dogs like Duke not only require medical care, food, rehabilitation, shelter, and love, but are usually heartworm positive and suffering from other serious injuries and medical issues. We serve a rural community that has been hard hit by unemployment, poverty, and drug addiction. There are more animals like him in great need in our community than we have room or money to help. With your support, we can save the lives of many more.
In a rural south Mississippi community plagued by poverty, limited education, and indifference about pets, there are thousands of abandoned and homeless pets. Since people can't afford to care for animals, they dump them on backroads where they starve. Dixie Adoptables provides the only shelter in a 1000 square mile area but is only financially supported by the small city of Lucedale. We help as many as we can, but are not sufficiently funded to care for the large numbers of animals in need.
Dixie Adoptables ensures that every animal receives all necessary preventative care and is altered and microchipped before adoption. Dogs like Duke which have heartworms, injuries, and other medical problems receive needed veterinary treatment. All of this costs money and with our current funding we can only help a limited number of these animals. You can directly help these animals through generous donations. This will allow us to help many more like him and place them in loving forever homes.
With your help, we will be able to save hundreds more animals each year. After having been thrown away to fend for themselves, they will be healthy and have loving families. Through transport to other areas, we have the ability to home many more animals but we don't have the funds to prepare them for their new homes. Every animal we get off the street reduces the number of litters that will be born to strays in the future. Over time, this will help make stories like Duke's a thing of the past.
