Puppy season has arrived at Dixie Adoptables! Not only did we take in nine puppies that had no mother, we also rescued two pregnant dogs who gave birth in our care. One had four puppies and the other had seven. That brings our total puppy count to twenty. They are all healthy and extremely cute!
In addition to the puppies and mama dogs that we took in, we also rescued six adult dogs. Of those, two were seniors, five were heartworm positive and only one was heartworm negative. Heartworms are a real problem in our community. Unlike many rescues, we don’t euthanize because a pet is heartworm positive, but treat them and get them healthy so they can live a long life with their new families. A shocking 90% of the dogs we have taken in over the past three months have been heartworm positive. The simple solution to this ongoing problem is for owners to give pets heartworm preventative, but in our community, this precaution is rarely taken. Treating them and caring for them for the extended time it takes for them to get back to good health is a huge cost for the rescue and your donations are vital to our ability to continue to give these pets a second chance.
We have also taken in two adult cats and are fostering five for another local rescue, For Pete’s Sake, They were rescued when a local mobile home park was shut down and all of the residents were evicted. Many people who had been feeding strays left and some even left their own pets behind to fend for themselves. Two of those cats are tame and three are feral. One also had heartworms, which is fairly rare in cats.
Over the past three months, we have worked very hard to find new homes for the animals in our care and as a result we have had 58 adoptions! We consider each and every one of them a victory and justification for the long hours we put in and the expenses that come along with what we do.
We would like to thank the unsung heroes of our success over the past few months, our fosters. They make it possible to continue helping the many of the animals we have taken in over the past few months and, like you, our supporters, we couldn’t do it without them.
