It’s been another busy and rewarding three months at Dixie Adoptables!
We’re so pleased to be able to share an extra-special and heartwarming story about Nola, the dog born without front legs. After Nola got her own wheelchair, she quickly learned how to use it, getting around happily on her own. Now, just a few months later, we’re so excited and thankful that Nola has found her forever home, with Tiffany and Tod, in Ohio. She has green grass and the great outdoors, and she is finally able to live the wonderful life that every dog should have.
This month we also rescued a litter of five sweet little puppies from a culvert that ran beneath an asphalt driveway. This turned into a tricky rescue, since one of the puppies didn’t want to come out of the culvert. After failing to coax her out with food and kind words, our rescuers devised a new plan. The rescuers needed some supplies from the hardware store up the road, but found that it had just closed for the day. When they knocked on the door and explained the dire situation, however, the hardware store employees kindly let them in. Using a very long piece of pvc pipe and some cushion for insulation, they constructed a pole to insert into one end of the culvert to gently push the puppy out of the other end. This puppy, however, was too smart for such plans, and she easily dodged the padded pole. Finally, after setting and leaving a cage trap with food, the puppy was left alone to come out when she wanted. Our rescuers checked every few hours, and finally found her trapped in the cage, frightened but friendly. All five puppies are now together and very sprightly, noisy, healthy, and happy.
Another dog we rescued recently, Ace, was picked up in the city park. He was very friendly, loving the attention of the children playing there. Little did we know how very much Ace loved the city park. The next morning, our kennel tech was surprised to find Ace’s cage empty. Rescuers headed back to the park and there was Ace, escaped back to his favorite spot. He was picked up a second time and now resides here with us at Dixie Adoptables, eagerly awaiting his forever home.
During the past three months, we have taken in 55 cats and kittens, 100 dogs and puppies, and nine guinea pigs. We’ve adopted out 17 animals, and in a rare moment were able to return one dog to his owner. We also transported 58 cats and dogs to the northeast US. We are so thankful for your support that makes all of this possible.
