If you didn’t see our latest Project Appeal, we are closing off Shuri’s fundraising project. Sadly, Shuri passed away suddenly during a procedure to place a fibre glass cast on her broken ankle, which she sustained in a freak accident while running.
Wildlife vet Dr Rogers was called out immediately to attend to her. Once she was examined, it was determined that placing a fibre glass cast on her broken ankle was the only option, and this procedure required surgery. Giraffe anaesthesia is always very risky, especially in very young animals, and the aim is always to get them back on their feet as soon as is practically possible.
The procedure was long and her very young body simply could not endure it. Despite all attempts to resuscitate her, she sadly passed away.
A big thank you to everyone who donated towards her care and who followed her antics closely on social media. Shuri crept into everyone’s hearts and her presence is sorely missed.
Yours faithfully,
Wildlife Conservation Trust and Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre teams
