PROVISION OF SHELTER TO CANCER PATIENTS.

By Janet Nakyanzi | Volunteer

Patient Relief Mission aspires to improve cancer care and management for female patients and their care-givers by providing hostel accommodation and feeding to those who come from rural areas in order to receive their treatment from the Uganda Cancer Institute who otherwise would have nowhere to stay in the city while undergoing treatment. Patient Relief Mission was founded in 2016 with the aim of ending the needless suffering for cancer patients in Kampala, Uganda.

SUCCESS STORY
Our programme is a new venture in Uganda, where there is only one treatment hospital for cancer that is Uganda Cancer Institute, situated in Kampala. With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting everyday life in the country, we are very grateful for the continued support from all our donors and partners which has enabled us to continue caring for our patients.
Patient Relief Mission (PRM) was able to shelter 75 cancer patients with their caretakers for the period from July to December 2020. During their stay at PRM, we provide them with 3 balanced diet meals each day, and accommodation since they did not have anywhere else to stay during that period as they undergo treatment, and we offer Psycho-social support as a supplement to their treatment.
MOMENT WITH ONE PATIENT at PRM
  Betty is a widow with 2 children from Kayunga district. Betty has breast cancer and was operated in July and unfortunately one of her breasts was amputated and she is undergoing radiation at Uganda Cancer Institute. Betty spent 3months sleeping under a tent on the veranda at UCI before and sometime after operation, she suffered a lot due to lack of a comfortable space to sleep, she had to buy food, and meet all her needs yet she was sick. After that period, she did not want to come back in the same condition and so she reached out to a social worker at Uganda Cancer Institute and narrated her ordeal and asked if she could be taken to a hostel. Thank God we had space at PRM and Betty was admitted to the hostel on 1st September 2020. After reaching PRM, her story changed, she is so thankful that she has time to rest, a car to take her for treatment, a descent home and meals served on time and she does not have to worry about where she will get what to eat. She says that now she has peace of mind, and hopes that she will get well as always counseled by our hostel retired nurse.
CHALLENGES
Due to the high spread of covid-19, we are un able to take on as many patients as we would wish to have because we have only one hostel with a capacity of 15patients per shift following the Standard Operating Procedures for Covid-19.
PRAYER REQUESTS
We invite you to join us in praying for;
1. Our patients to recover so they can move on with their families and settle in their families
smoothly.
2. That we enlarge and have enough space that can take on more patients who need our
support.
CONCLUSION
As COVID-19 continues to spread, the future is so unpredictable. These are challenging times for the country and world at large, however, this will not stop us from making a difference in our community. We are doing everything possible to sustain the daily operations.
We thank you for your continued support that is enabling us to make a difference to the vulnerable patients under our care. It is our wish that you and your community will stay safe, healthy and peaceful.
