Help Promote Good Reading Habits in Kalimantan

Dear kind donors,

I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones in good health in these difficult times.

It has been eight months since the Covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia. Though our Community Library remains closed until the government mandates otherwise, this does not mean that we stop connecting with the children in the surrounding areas.

All over Indonesia, children continue learning from home. In big cities, they are learning online. However, in rural areas like Bukit Batu, children struggle to learn on their own. The resources from school are limited due to inadequate learning materials and lack of teachers. Parents are now struggling to provide food on their table as many of them have lost their jobs and the added expenditure for their children’s education is not on their list of priorities. 

With your donation, we have been distributing home learning packages in several villages.  The package consists of storybooks, coloring materials, a box of milk, and educational working sheets (English words puzzle, Mathematical crosswords, and thematic writing instructions like National Children's Day and Independence Day). Most of the packages are delivered to the children’s homes while few others are picked up by their parents from the library. We also welcome library members to make a direct appointment with the librarian to borrow books related to their schoolwork.  

On a final note, we will be participating in this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign on GlobalGiving.
