Help Promote Good Reading Habits in Kalimantan

One of the YUM’s community library’s wishes to increase its outreach area in order to provide more resources for children and adults, but to do this the library would need more financial resources. One of the ways to achieve this goal is by inviting children from various local schools to come and enjoy our library. During their visit, they will have the same access to books and activities as our local library members would.

Since March this year, we have had special guests visiting our library each morning. They are students from local primary and kindergarten schools. This particular program is aimed at imparting good reading habit at an early age and to introduce the children to our community library, its educational activities and resources that our library offers. The students spend their first part of the session reading, then they continue with various activities like spelling, grammar and literacy which are sometimes related to their school subjects and curriculum

When students from SDN Sei Gohong came, they practised simple science experiments using the Science Club tools with the assistance of the librarian. The other day, the students from kindergarten had fun with colouring and drawing activities. The students were very happy to do activities outside of school in our library which is a new exciting environment.

Our librarian assisted the children to access resources while they were learning and playing educational games, these games are connected to their school subjects and reinforce classroom learning. After all of the fun learning and playing games, each child received a glass of milk.
