For most women, pregnancy and childbirth are extraordinary life events that bring about joy and excitement. But in many parts of the world, especially in rural areas like Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, pregnancy and childbirth are events that can bring about disease, injury and even death, unfortunate instances that many of us in the developed world, will never have to deal with, or even think about.
Without adequate and accurate information, complications in pregnancy and child delivery are more likely to occur. To educate members of the community, raise awareness, dispel myths, and promote health, HOPE Mothers’ Clubs (MCs) were formed and have developed a strong presence and growing following in the area.
You can see from the photo one of our MCs in action (along with some of their children), discussing the importance of antenatal and postnatal care! These are just a couple of the topics that our mothers are able to freely speak about, as they are in the safe and welcoming environment of an MC gathering.
The knowledge that Mothers' Club leaders and members are sharing in the community have been instrumental to HOPE's success. As a result of their dedication and hard work, HOPE has been able to provide over 400 antenatal care checkups. Your understanding and generosity are what enable these Mothers' Clubs to spread vital health information and encourage others in the community to seek healthcare and in turn reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
