This project is to help children with intellectual development disability (IDD) to make friends at school in Mongolia by raising awareness in the community. In order to bring children with IDD and their peers together under one roof, we aim in conducting training about advocacy, diversity and social awareness about IDD to parents, teachers and their peers. Besides, we do organize events and activities to children with IDD and peers by means of creating an inclusive environment.
Up until now, there has been not a single officially recognized inclusive elementary, middle, and high school in Mongolia. It is the biggest obstacle for children with intellectual developmental disabilities to be part of the society. There are false stereotypes and prejudices among parents that children with and without IDD should not be together. It shows that we need to make more awareness activities.
Best Buddies Mongolia is not only to hold training and workshops for parents, teachers and volunteers on how vital it is for children with IDD need to be socially accepted, but also to organize events and activities for targeted groups. The more people know, the more we can build inclusive and diverse environment.
Children with special needs will be fully accepted in the community. It will lead them to have more opportunities to involve themselves. As a result of being involved citizen, they will contribute to build better society in the long-run.
