Project Report | Sep 6, 2024
Working women, exceptional mothers

By Beatriz Gandara | Project Leader

Women like Doña Merlin are the ones who most deserve our help; this is her story. At 30 years old, she lives with her three children, two girls and a boy. She only managed to study up to the fifth grade in primary school because her parents did not have sufficient economic resources and because she started her own family at a young age.

The Agrarian Community of San Vicente, Champerico, where they live, is located about 32 kilometers from the center of the Retalhuleu department. It has a warm climate and a large territorial extension, which they use for all kinds of crops such as sugar cane, cotton, mango, sesame, corn, or orange, among others.

Six years ago, she was left alone with her children as her husband decided to migrate and support them financially from abroad. She lives with her in-laws, who have always provided her with unconditional support, while she helps them work in the fields, planting corn, beans, sesame, and mango, all to cover her children’s educational expenses. Her greatest desire is to see her children become professionals, succeed, and improve their quality of life.

For this reason, Doña Merlin is grateful to the Scholarship Project for the training and support, which has been very beneficial for her family. She also extends special thanks to all of you, who, with your contributions, make it possible for many girls to improve their quality of life, allowing them to develop their potential to the fullest both within and outside of their community.

Thank you for believing in this project, and together, we can transform lives! “Your effort and unconditional support make the world a better place”.
