At Horseracing Wrongs, transparency is key to exposing the industry’s harsh realities. Right now, we’re actively working on Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to uncover horse deaths and other critical data that tracks try to keep hidden. These records are essential in holding the industry accountable by getting this information in mainstream media, and fueling advocacy efforts.
While this stage is mostly behind the scenes, it’s a crucial step toward real change. At the same time, we are gearing up for our Triple Crown Campaign, where we will be deploying mobile billboards and protests across the country to demand an end to this cruel and deadly industry while giving the horses the voices they deserve!
GOOD NEWS!
The betting numbers are in for 2024, and progress is undeniable. Total wagering on U.S. horse races was down 3.35% from 2023—marking the third consecutive annual decline. Even more telling, when adjusted for inflation, betting has plummeted 57.3% since its peak in 2003, with no signs of recovery. As Thoroughbred Daily News put it:
“There doesn’t appear to be anything on the horizon that will reverse the trend.”
Additionally, the industry is shrinking—the 2024 foal crop is projected to be just 18,000, the smallest since 1965. These numbers prove what we’ve long known: We are winning!
Thanks to your support, we can continue to expose the truth, push for policy changes, and mobilize nationwide action for the horses!
ACTION NEEDED IN FLORIDA!
If you live in the state of Florida, we need your help!
Please use this tool to send an email to your Florida State Representatives to urge them to Support HB 105 / S 408 which would allow Gulfstream Park to decouple its gaming license (slot machines/casino gaming) from live horseracing.
The Stronach Group is in favor of this bill passing so they can, in a few years, stop horseracing at Gulfstream and instead build up their casino business. But the horseracing industry is trying to fight this bill from passing - they are contacting members of the Florida Legislature to oppose the bill.
We need YOU to contact your Florida lawmakers TODAY, by email, and by phone as well! (Phone call script and contact information will appear after you use our online tool to send your representives an email.)
This bill would weaken the horseracing industry in Florida, reduce the number of horses bred and exploited!
Passing HB 105 / S 408 is a crucial step in ending horseracing subsidies and protecting horses from harm.
Thanks to your support and ongoing partnership, we can continue pushing for truth, sharing our findings with the public and media, and fighting for these exploited animals.
Stay tuned as we bring this information to light and take action nationwide!
