Year end update

By Patrick Battuello | Founder and President

Dear Friends,

I hope this holiday season finds you safe and well. I think I can speak for all when I say 2021 can’t come soon enough. In the meantime, even in a traditionally slower period for the horseracing industry, we at Horseracing Wrongs remain pressed to the grindstone. Every day, as you know, we report facts and data that can only be found at horseracingwrongs.org. In addition, our cruelty investigations continue: identifying and facilitating the rescue of (egregiously) at-risk, still-on-the-track horses and laying bare the stories of just-off-the-track horses who have landed in kill pens or in similarly perilous situations. And of course, our track protests march on.

I have also been in close contact with USA Today as the paper has plans for a broad piece on horseracing deaths. Given the news competition over the past year (an understatement), getting a major national outlet to cover this wicked industry is no small feat. We will keep you updated.

On December 8, I headlined a live virtual webinar entitled, “Horseracing: Subsidized Cruelty.” This was done in conjunction with a smart, organized Pennsylvania-based coalition whose aim it is to strip that state’s racing subsidies and redirect them where they belong: education. It is our hope that this will become a template for attacking subsidies in other states. The recording can be found here.

And finally, since we last wrote, two more racetracks have closed – for good: Scarborough Downs, a harness track in Maine; and Calder Race Course (most recently known as Gulfstream Park West), a Thoroughbred track in Florida. Without question, this (moral) progress is due in no small part to our unrelenting exposure of this vile industry. The winds of change are blowing in but one direction.

Thank you again for your continued support, and we wish all a safe and happy holiday.
