We have exciting news regarding changes we are making to ensure that we deliver the very best education possible for our African Angels.

Management Team changes

This time ten years ago, we were interviewing prospective Grade 1 teachers to replace Sharon Edworthy as she moved up to teach our first Grade 4 class. One of the teachers we interviewed stood out as being very much the kind of person needed to teach and guide our children. Her name was Chantel Viljoen. She committed herself 100% to supporting the vision and mission of the school and gave beyond expectations in the classroom.

We are thrilled to now welcome her back as our Admin Head, as Sharon moves into an Education Specialist role, focusing on Visible Learning, ensuring that our learners receive the best possible education.

We look forward to the positive impact she will undoubtedly have on our school’s growth and development.

Boosting aftercare to boost literacy skills

We have used the Dibels (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) at the end of each term for nearly five years, as an objective measure of our children's reading progress.

Since the beginning of the year we have been running extra activities for our Grades 2 - 4 to help those children who are struggling, and extend those who are shining. Each afternoon, after tea, the children rotate in groups through small-group reading, memory games, online Reading Eggs, story time and a mix of vocab building/puppet shows with Aunty Margaret.

In Term 4 we decided to formalise the small-group reading to include levelled readers, comprehension activities, retelling activities, vocab building, and reading strategies, using the Reading A-Z levelled reading system.

We are fortunate to have "found" Aunty Janice, a very experienced Grade R teacher, to reinforce (and in some instances re-teach) phonics with some of our children who were struggling. We are so excited to have her join our team.

We also did refresher training with our reading mentors, with a particular focus on sounding out words, and teaching specific concepts such as Q and U, the Silent E, F and Ph, etc

We will be watching the children's Dibels scores to assess the impact of this more structured after-care programme.
