This morning started with a call from a farmer who had picked up an young baboon left behind when the troop were chased by dogs, then concerned residents reported an injured baboon in small community (it sounds very like a male dominance fight and he should recover well), this was followed by news that the CT2 troop had gone into the world famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens but then a young two month old infant was knocked over by a car on the busy road outside the gardens (the infant is being carried by troop members and CGHSPCA will check on the injuries) and then onto news regarding one of our real little character baboons who apears to be ill and is on his way to a veterinary examination....this was all by 11.30.
In the past weeks two baboons in different locations have been killed by dogs, and wildlife rehabilitation and release centers across South Africa continue to collect orphaned baboons, the victims of human behaviors.
The reason I tell you this is to illustrate how under threat baboons are; the baboon human overlap is increasingly fraught with conflict despite the fact that there are so many people doing such amazing work to help reduce attractants which bring baboons into conflict with humans, work to create effective educational material and outreach programmes, work to provide welfare, care and shelter as well as the ongoing advocacy and legal work to get best management practise enshrined in conservation authority mandates.
We are contunuing to work as hard as we possibly can to not only protect our baboons in these day to day situations, but to ensure longer term best practise and effective management strategies.
I thank you so much for your ongoing support and want you to know that by helpling Baboon Matters you are helping baboons.
