400 Campers in 2019!

By Jen DeMeo | Director of Development

In Summer 2019, Wagon Road Camp welcomed 400 campers from New York City and Westchester. New York City children who attend Wagon Road Camp are often referred by Children’s Aid counselors and social workers from Children’s Aid after-school, community center, and foster care programs. Wagon Road Camp is run by highly-trained social workers and educational professionals who train and supervise staff so they can be of great support to these at-risk children.

Each day at Wagon Road is new, different, and exciting for kids:

  • Children learn. By learning to swim, ride a horse, perform a dance routine, or cook new foods, children are empowered and feel they can do anything, an important part of seeing beyond today to tomorrow.
  • Children create. In art, music, and drama, children create new worlds with media, sound, and actions. They unlock skills and emotions they did not know were there.
  • Children literally climb to new heights. On our Adventure Ropes Course, children climb as high as 50 feet, leapfor a trapeze, and zip line across the camp. Support and encouragement to succeed is critical as they wrestle with both the desire to achieve and their fear of failing. The program teaches one of life’s greatest skills: how to overcome fear in pursuit of an important goal.
  • Children play, create, work, plan, and eat together. The group experience is not just organization, but also communication and connection. Learning to talk through issues or problems is a skill used every day in every context and is central to succeeding and thriving.

The memories that children gain at Wagon Road last a lifetime. Tania, a 2019 camper, reflects on her summer, "My favorite thing this summer was all the activities you get to participate in. Another thing I love about Wagon Road Camp is the kindness and all of the groups feel like a family, always having each other’s backs.”

Thank you for another amazing summer, filled with self-improvement, learning, and FUN!
