In Gjirokaster, Help Roma Children Stay in School

Life is hard for many of the children in our Gjirokaster after-school program. Sometimes it's hard to believe when you see them at the center in Gjirokaster. They're typically whispering to one another and smiling. Especially when I am there to take photos! There's something about me that just makes all of them giggle every time I'm there. I'm not sure why it happens, but it makes for some pretty great photos. 

The truth about their lives is often extreme for many Americans to fully grasp, even when I went to visit the home of a couple of the children, I was a bit shocked to see the conditions in which they live. I’ve lived in Albania for over four years and it’s still a bit surprising when I see people who have no choice but to live in tents – or very rudimentary structures.

Despite all of this, the boys and girls find things that make them happy. And that is in large part thanks to the donors and the staff of NG Gjirokaster. With the help of some generous donors, we were able to provide these kids with a holiday celebration that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. They all got gifts for Christmas, and you can see from their smiles that they were having an incredible time.
