Just before the closure of schools in early June 2021, Voice for Humanity Uganda has been conducting Menstrual Health education in schools to raise awareness and reduce stigma and teasing of girls by the boys. In Fuda primary school located in Boroli refugee settlement of Adjumani in Uganda, over 300 boys and girls were mobilised by the school on 24th of May 2021. After one hour of engagement with the pupils (boys and girls) on topics relating to body changes, boys and girls biological make, menstruation among others, the girls and boys appreciated the discussion in which most of the girls expressed that the discussion and involvement of boys in the discussion would now help reduce teasing of girls by the boys something which some girls said makes them absent from school when they are in their menstruation cycle. Boys also said, they now appreciate the value of menstruation in girls and will support girls as their own sisters and not tease or bully them again.
Going forward and due to the current total COVID 19 lock down in Uganda, the project team will be moving from house to house supporting the most vulnerable refugee girls with menstrual hygiene kits and educating them on menstrual hygiene best practices. These target girls will be identified through the refugee women leaders who know the most vulnerable girls in the community. The girls to be supported will mainly be child mothers, orphaned girls, seperated girls from family, Un Accompnaied Minors and those with disability. Also child survivors of forced marriages will be supported with menstrual health kits.
