Afghanistan is grappling with multiple crises, including economic collapse, hunger, inflation, poverty, and widespread exclusion of women and girls from public life. Over half the population is projected to need humanitarian assistance, with a significant portion requiring health aid and protection assistance. In this context, access to healthcare is extremely challenging, especially for marginalized groups. With over two-thirds of the population living in poverty, more than 76% of healthcare expenses are out-of-pocket, making medical services unaffordable for many. The lack of available public services and the high cost of private healthcare further exacerbate the situation, leaving an estimated 6 million people with insufficient access to healthcare.
The French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) has been a beacon of hope amidst these challenges. Established through international partnerships and managed by the Aga Khan University, FMIC is a 176-bed tertiary care hospital in Kabul serving all 34 Afghan provinces. It offers high-end imaging and state-of-the-art lab diagnostics, achieving SafeCare level 5 accreditation with 99% compliance. To address the shortage of healthcare professionals, FMIC provides a Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME) program and on-the-job training for public hospital professionals. Through its Patient Welfare Programme, FMIC has supported nearly 800,000 patients with USD 55 million in aid, ensuring access to care for those unable to pay. These efforts have significantly contributed to enhancing Afghanistan’s healthcare system and supporting families in need.
The support from GlobalGiving donors and others has been instrumental in making this possible. Donor contributions have provided critical financial assistance, covering healthcare expenses for indigent patients and ensuring that they receive the necessary medical care. These funds help sustain FMIC’s capacity to provide specialized care and support training programs to address the gap in healthcare human resources. The generosity of donors is a ray of hope for the poorest, unreached, and marginalized populations in Afghanistan, enabling FMIC to continue its mission of providing high-quality healthcare to all, regardless of their financial situation. Through their support, donors are not just helping individual patients but are also contributing to the long-term strengthening of Afghanistan’s healthcare system, ensuring a brighter future for many.
