Despite global knowledge of the crisis in Haiti and the struggle of the people, the resources needed to provide basic requirements of food, water, and critical health care have been scarce in the communities in which Sonje Ayiti works.
The residents of these North and North-Eastern communities such as Limonade, Bahon, Quartier-Morin, Cap-Haitien, Milot, Grande-Riviere du Nord, Acul du Nord, Plaine du Nord, Terrier-Rouge, Trou du Nord, Caracol, and others face daily challenges. Social unrest, food insecurity, lack of clean water, fuel shortages, unsanitary living conditions, lack of proper health care, and the resurgence of Cholera have further compounded the already desperate public health situation in their communities.
Although Sonje Ayiti has implemented programs to assist residents in the affected areas, the sad truth is these activities cannot be carried out effectively without adequate funding. As a result, progress and aid are slow in many communities.
However, there are some successes as with a 12 year- old girl who was examined at the Mobile Health Clinic and referred to the hospital for care. She was diagnosed with Osteomyelitis, a bone infection. Her treatment and hospitalization have been extensive over the past two years including surgery. She recently returned home and to school after two years and is awaiting the opportunity for much needed hip surgery so that she may be able to walk again. See Jodeline's progress in the attached photos.
