Blind people are especially vulnerable to the Corona virus. They rely on touch to read Braille and to navigate unfamiliar surroundings. They also need people to assist and guide them - so social distancing is really not easy. In South Africa most Blind people are unemployed - making them susceptible to malnutrition and low immunity and at greater risk of contracting the virus. This emergency project aims to feed and equip as many Blind people with the basic necessities to keep them safe.
Blind people are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. Especially in poor regions such as the Eastern Cape SA - the 2nd poorest and most populated province. Many blind people here live in poverty; do not have access to technology or adequate education or job prospects. Their poverty status makes them vulnerable to low immunity. Their reliance on touch to navigate places and spaces makes them prone to contracting viruses. Reliance on guides makes social distancing nearly impossible.
Our fundraising events have come to a halt due to restrictions. However, we aim to use existing resources and raise others through campaigns such as this to provide continued access to services and assistance for our Blind beneficiaries especially at this time. Reaching out through technology & related services & devices will allow us to do so. In this way we can: communicate precautions & advice, provide counselling, educate & stimulate Blind children and provide food and other sanitary items.
Goods: practical relief and support to blind people affected by poverty will ensure that blind adults & children continue to be: nourished, counselled & provided with personal protective equipment & sanitation to keep them physically & mentally healthy & safe. Guiding & Going forward: providing Blind people with digitally adapted rehabilitation & education services designed to assist with social distancing during the pandemic - ensuring ongoing rehabilitation & learning without exposure.
