Children attending RIPPLE Africa's Pre-Schools are now eating orange fleshed sweet potatoes every day. Moses really loves the taste and looks forward to his daily lunch. Moses lives with his grandparents and they are delighted that he is receiving a nutritious meal at pre-school as they struggle to feed their family. RIPPLE Africa pre-school teachers are all now growing the orange fleshed sweet potatoes in plots near each school and they have just harvested the first crop which the children are really enjoying!
As well as providing more vines to the pre-schools, your donation is helping us to increase the numbers of orange fleshed sweet potatoes grown by farmers in Nkhata Bay District. We have been testing several new varieties already to see which grows best in our local area. Dan, our Assistant Manager, recently helped farmers in Mazembe to harvest their first crop of sweet potatoes - each farmer in our trial group has grown several different varieties of orange fleshed potatoes on their plots. Environmental staff working for RIPPLE Africa and the District Agricultural team attended the first harvests recently and have assessed how well each variety of sweet potato has grown. The varieties which have produced the best crops will be the ones which we will be distributing to farmers taking part in this project. Dorah is a local farmer who is delighted that she will be receiving sweet potato vines to plant out near her house. She attended the harvesting at her neighbour's farm and was given an armful of vines by Dan to take home and plant. She is seen below holding one of the vines and a sweet potato which she told us she was going to eat straight away as it looked so tasty!
Thank you so much for your support! There is still time to donate again if you would like to - or visit our website where you can find out more about the other projects that RIPPLE Africa are running in one of the poorest countries in the world.
