Group Home(s) for Special Needs Taiwanese Children

     The Taiwan Love and Hope International Charity is steadfast in providing 24/7 residential caregiving services to children with neurodevelopmental and genetic disorders. Currently, the organization cares for three children with genetic conditions, ensuring their needs are met despite the challenges posed by their complex medical conditions. As colder weather settles over Taiwan, the flu season has hit hard, with widespread infections reported in the news. Unfortunately, two of the children under the charity’s care experienced severe flu complications, leading to sudden fever spikes, seizures, and loss of consciousness, necessitating urgent hospitalizations via ambulance. While one child was discharged after a few days of treatment, the other has remained hospitalized for over two weeks as doctors work diligently to determine the cause of her recurring fevers. Despite these setbacks, the charity remains unwavering in its commitment to their well-being.

     The child still in the hospital is thankfully no longer in critical condition, but her fluctuating fever requires ongoing medical attention. Taiwanese doctors are working tirelessly to diagnose and treat her condition, while staff members from Taiwan Love and Hope International Charity are providing continuous emotional and physical support during her hospital stay. Their dedication reflects the organization’s deep commitment to nurturing these children not only in health but also through challenging medical crises. Everyone involved, from caregivers to medical professionals, is hopeful for her full recovery. The team eagerly anticipates her return home, where she can resume her routine and attend school, bringing her one step closer to regaining a sense of normalcy.

It is more fun to be part of the Taiwan Love and Hope International Charity!

True to our goal of building a community among the low-income Taiwanese families with children with neurodevelopmental conditions, we continue to offer regular self-development, stress management, and parenting classes for free. We also have our weekly Saturday meals together. The classes we provide would normally be costly and beyond the means of all the families we serve. The vision is to equip and empower the parents so that they can become more efficient in nurturing a loving and understanding relationship with their children. 

We recently opened yoga classes for the mothers and caregivers who take care of children with more severe neurodevelopmental conditions. Most of them need to put up with the mood swings and tantrums of their children, so it has become important to teach them how to take care of themselves and practice mindfulness.

Last July 21–22, everyone also got all fired up when we organized a 2-day trip to Taipei. It was a 5-hour bus ride from Kaohsiung, but it was well worth it since the families enjoyed the Taipei Zoo and other scenic places we visited. It was challenging to put together children with ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, and other special needs on a bus for such a long trip, but doing it together was really heartwarming as the parents and staff supported each other in helping the children with the behavioral and emotional challenges they experienced during the trip. Despite the challenges, all the children came through and enjoyed watching the penguins, tigers, reptiles, and other animals at the Taipei Zoo.

We hope to organize more outdoor activities to further socialize the children and families under our care, since many of them avoid public places because of how challenging it can be when their children have tantrums.

We realized that by working as a community, it reinforces parenting behaviors discussed in the classes offered by the charity and socializes everyone to be more supportive of each other.
