Partnered with the Shifa Royal Hospital in an International Business Internship Program, Ashley, Holly, Grace, Eloise, Mia, Rachel and Cara all meet regularly to tackle different issues that the local Nigerian hospital faces. Since September of 2018, this team from Glen Ridge High School has worked to improve hygiene awareness and the hygiene of patients at the hospital to better the health of the entire community.
Among the staff and patients of the Shifa Royal Hospital, there is a lack of awareness on how to care for their own hygiene and how to prevent the spread of diseases. Without proper disinfection procedures, the staff are unaware of how many patients are developing illnesses due to improper hygiene and infections from others. The sanitation department has a limited budget and access to cleaning products that are necessary to provide the patients with the proper environment.
To increase hygiene awareness, we will work to spread the knowledge of proper hygiene practices to the staff and patients at the hospital. We have also developed a more organized cleaning procedure to ensure the rooms are completely disinfected and that the patients are in the best care possible. Because a lot of people go in and out of the hospital, it is crucial that proper disinfecting approaches are put in place to certify cleanliness.
The Shifa Royal Hospital plays a major role in the communal and economic vivacity of Bauchi. In high-poverty communities, hospitals are necessary to provide regeneration to the people and to stimulate economic growth. Good health is the key to unlocking a bright future, especially for the patients at the Shifa Royal Hospital. With hygiene related issues being some of the leading causes of death in Nigeria, the Shifa Royal Hospital needs as much help as possible to educate their community.
