“We almost felt like our life was missing something; like there was a hole,” says Jessica. She and her husband Jesse were happily married with an adopted three-year-old daughter, and they enjoyed their life together, but they also felt an urge to expand their family.
Sisters Victoria and Daniela met Jessica and Jesse through Kidsave’s Weekend Miracles program. Their sweet bond reminded Jesse of his relationship with his own siblings. “I have an older and a younger brother,” he said, “and when we saw them goofing around, it just warmed our hearts, and we said, “this is it.”
They spent six months getting to know each other before the girls moved in. Everyone’s dreams came true when the adoption was finalized. Jesse and Jessica were moved to tears. “[Jessica] cried and said, ‘it’s finalized. A tear came down my eye and we hugged each other," said Jesse. The girls said, “we felt safe, like this is my home, these are my true parents, and we did feel loved.”
“The biggest thing I want for my children is for them to have a life full of love and joy,” said Jessica. “I want them to travel the world and see things I never got to see and have everything that makes them happy.”
This family’s heart-warming story is a reminder of why this work is vital for foster youth.
At another Weekend Miracles event this past Earth Day, a longtime Kidsave and volunteer Natalie spoke about why she provides space for these events. “It’s part of our responsibility, to not just thrive in the community, but to give back. It breaks your heart when you sit down with some of these kids and say, ‘what are you looking for?’ and they don’t say ‘I want a big car, or a big home,’ but they say, ‘I want a family.’ It’s part of our responsibility to give back.”
Nine out of ten hosting relationships in this program continue beyond the initial one-year commitment. Since it began in 2006, Kidsave’s Weekend Miracles program has matched 760 youth in foster care with caring committed families.
