The Story of Ronald, Jorge, and Junior
Children between the ages of 11 and 13, two from Caracas, Venezuela and one of them from Cartagena, Colombia were found in a street living situation in the Chambacu neighborhood and entered at Fundacion Dones de Misericordia on December 18th, 2020 where they were assessed from the different areas; psychology, social work, nutrition, dietitian and pedagogy.
The children quietly narrated their personal and family history, which revealed emotions of anger and helplessness. The use of controlled substances was identified as well as feelings of sadness, disability, anxiety, disoriented about the risks of high street stay, and consequences of consumption of controlled substances. The boys also exhibited low tolerance to frustration, weak emotion management, low self-esteem, poor self-concept. They were referred for specialized evaluation and started a detoxification process for a month. They were discharged with a medical diagnosis that indicated behavioral health disorders secondary to abuse of controlled substances being managed with pharmacological treatment.
An individual service plan was developed from the different areas implementing strategies according to their needs, as well as working on social skills training, hygiene habits, emotion management training, life project strengthening, independent living skills, review of the risks of high street stay, and monitoring of the evolution of pharmacological treatment.
Currently, the boys have improved their hygiene, self-esteem, writing, and reading skills, are able to follow the house routines and rules, participate in educational activities, and recovered their weight.
