With the generous donations from the Lyra in Africa valued supporters, Lyra in Africa was able to continue to support the most vulnerable girls continue with their education and thrive! Lyra in Africa has now constructed 11 hostels which accommodate over 1000 girls each year. Through the Lyra in Africa Christmas campaign we have been able to continue with supporting the most disadvantaged girls in these hostels with food support, blankets, sani pads and safe drinking water devises. These necessary but important gifts make such a difference in their lives.
Mercy, is just one of the secondary school girls staying in a Lyra hostel. This is her story:
“My name is Mercy, I am 14 years old. I live with my grandmother, father and brother. My mother died a long time ago. My father is sick, he his bed ridden with no ability to do anything. My grandmother is a maize small holder farmer. Her and I work hard to be able to buy father’s medication however we are not seeing any changes to his health.
I am the first born, and I have been selected to join secondary school, but my father is not able to support me. My grandmother had to ask for a loan from other neighbours to buy me a school uniform.
Through the support of Lyra, I recently joined the hostel where I now live in a safe environment. I get enough time to study and I have found new friends. I love studying and my dream is to become a primary teacher. I am very grateful to the teachers; they teach very well and the matron because she takes good care of us.”
By supporting girls like Mercy, we ensure that she can safely continue her education: giving Mercy the power to change the status quo and shape her own future.
Thank you valuable support!
