Planning for the Year Ahead
The Kaliyachak Girls' School currently has 112 students enrolled with around 90 students attending regularly. The focus of the teachers is on academic subjects with the primary aim of completing the syllabus. All the students have received their textbooks, notebooks and some stationery for the school year.
The nutrition program that we added last fall has been well received by the students and their parents and has contributed to improved student health. We plan to continue providing gur-mungaphali (peanuts and jaggery) as a daily, mid-morning snack to supplement the girls' nutrition. The flavorful combination helps to increase hemoglobin and protect against anemia.
We're also planning refresher courses for the teachers so that they can improve upon their method of teaching and make the process more child-centric. We are inviting several expert teacher trainers to the schools to engage with the teachers and equip them with practical skills and a more hands on approach to make school a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience for the students.
Expanding the Sewing Unit
The school's sewing unit has 20 older girls and formers students attending. We are expanding the activities of the unit and exploring the potential to make this training unit commercially viable. Initially, the girls will learn to sew cloth bags (jholas) which we will provide as school bags for all of the students.
If this initial sewing project is successful, the sewing unit will begin to make bags to order. Two additional sewing machines will be purchased this coming quarter to expand the sewing unit and offer additional opportunities for the older girls.
Your Contributions Support the School's Programs
With your help, we can enhance our educational programs and reach our goal of educating 400 girls between 6 and 14 years old. An educated girl marries later, has fewer children, has healthier children and earns more income during her lifetime. Her education improves the quality of life of her family and her community.
Thank you for your generous support,
