Children are learning and having fun at El Arenal!

We would like to send a huge thank you for your ongoing support towards Fundación El Arenal! El Arenal is a community center located in the Feria Libre neighborhood of Cuenca, serving the poorest and most marginalized sector of the city. Thanks to your support, El Arenal continues serving 75 street children who are in great need of recreational, educational, and nutritional programs!

Here's what's been going on over the last few months at El Arenal!

The children have officially entered into summer vacation! Many hours were spent tutoring and preparing for their final exams. This year a big focus has been on reading skills. Remember the beautiful reading room we helped construct in 2016? It is being put to great use! Reading lessons and activities are helping the children develop critical skills, which does not get enough attention on their educational path.

El Arenal has also been working hard to ensure that children are having new experiences that they would never have the opportunity to participate in if it wasn't for this community center. Thanks to a local volunteer leader, El Arenal has been celebrating the children's birthdays on a monthly basis, through this each child has the opportunity to feel special by receiving cake and a small gift. These are moments that children will not forget.

We also helped El Arenal celebrate International Children's Day with a fun visit to a local playground center! The laughter shared reminds us of the important things in life. Additionally, older children from El Arenal had the chance to go to the beach! For many of these children, their only wish was to see the ocean for the first time. Being able to travel to the beach with their friends and El Arenal staff lets these children open their minds to new places and shows them other opportunities that exist in their own country.

Without the generosity and support from the Global Giving community, these 75 children would never receive access to these unique opportunities. Thank you from the Hearts of Gold and the Fundación El Arenal teams for making a difference in the lives of these children.
