Give Disabled Romanian Orphans their 1st Playspace

Dear Friends,

With your help, we were able to complete the Playspace at the Barlad Complex for Children with Disabilities (Barlad Orphanage). Our goal was for the kids to be able to use the space this winter and YES! we met that goal.

We were able to take a wooden outdoor pavilion and turn it into a welcoming year-round space for the children at the orphanage.  Here is some of what we all did together:

• Transformed the pavilion structure by adding additional beams which enabled us to enclose it with heavy plastic walls and sides that can be rolled up to let in a summer breeze or rolled down for warmth in winter.

• Electricity was installed.

• Lighting and heaters were purchased and installed.

• The administrative staff of the orphanage joined our construction crew in painting the pavilion 

• We put down heavy duty indoor-outdoor green carpet to cover the beaten up wooden floor

• Comfy couches were purchased 

• A large screen was purchased and installed so that the kids can watch movies or the screen can be used for the new karoke machine that was bought

• Play items for the kids were purchased. These include a big toy kitchen, multiple easels including one that is a table top for kids who are unable to stand and one with a little stool; many art supplies, and a karoke machine. Also on the list to be delivered are toy musical instruments and pretend play dress up items.

We will continue to see what is needed and purchase what we can!  Our next project is an outdoor playground !  Child protection laws prevent us from showing you direct photos of the children or close up of the space but here are a couple that give you the idea. Below also is a photo of the thank you letter we received from the head of child protection services for Vaslui County.
