The Covid-19 situation continues to negatively effect the ability of people in rural Thailand to get access to dental care. Some villages and entire county areas temporarily cutoff access once an outbreak is known. This continues to negatively impact the poor who already had problems getting access to dental care.
Recently our team formally requested to visit an area in Doi Saket District which wasn't allowing visitors or schools to be open. The local government allowed our team to enter if we passed a Covid nasal test. We considered this to be worth the expense and temporary nasal discomfort in order to provide the area with dental care. This was also a risk to ourselves because even a false positive test would mean at least a 10 day quarantine period; potentially in a field hospital. The problem of tooth decay in children is an urgent matter to be taken seriously so we were glad to receive formal approval.
We were able to do our usual activities to teach brushing, proper oral care for children, and gave them toothbrush kits. We also provided fluoride varnish for all children participating in this activity. We were so happy that despite the barriers to entry, we were allowed to help 70 children on this particular trip.
