This project is a 5 year roadmap designed for 24 girls aged 10 to 22 residing in 3 selected children homes (otherwise known as orphanages) in Ibadan, Nigeria with the aims of enhancing their computer literacy, providing them with laptops and ICT learning resources, and establishing an ICT incubator platform for mentorship and peer learning programs.
ICT plays a crucial role in shaping both national and global development. However, the field has long been dominated by men, leaving only a small number of women involved. UN Women and ITU in 2021 reported that girls tend to access digital technology later than boys, and their usage is often restricted by their parents. Moreover, there is a significant issue concerning children in care homes in Nigeria as they lack access to essential ICT equipment; This hampers their interest in ICT.
In 2021, Tabitha Home launched the 5 Year Roadmap, training 24 females (10-22 years) residing in 3 care homes in Ibadan, Nigeria. The project aims to advance their ICT skills from beginner to advanced, focusing on improving computer literacy and establishing an ICT incubator for mentorship and peer learning. Girls Tech 1.3 (2023) marks a milestone as the girls transition to the intermediate level. They will delve into Data Analysis and Multimedia editing.
Tabitha Home Team designed a targeted digital gender divide intervention, with the aim of empowering girls in care homes with ICT knowledge and skills so that they can, in turn, pass on this valuable expertise to other children within their respective care homes. The vision is to successfully graduate the first cohort of 24 girls from 3 different care homes by the year 2025. By 2026, the program aims to expand to 4 homes, offering more girls ICT skills and creating positive change.
