INTRODUCTION
Girls Tech: 5-Year ICT Road Map is a visionary project initiated by Tabitha Home. It draws its inspiration from the theme of the International Day of the Girl Child 2021, which emphasizes 'Digital Generation, Our Generation.' This initiative aims to empower girls and young women in three care homes in Ibadan by providing them with essential ICT skills over a 5-year period. Through Girls Tech, Tabitha Home is committed to bridging the gender gap in technology and ensuring that girls have equal access to opportunities in the digital era.
The Girls Tech initiative has evolved over the years, starting with its inaugural event, Girls Tech Hangout 1.1, held on October 16, 2021. Building on the success of its first edition, the second installment, Girls Tech 1.2, took place from August 29th to September 7th, 2022. The Girls Tech initiative is currently in its third year within its overarching 5-year plan.
Girls Tech 1.3, in collaboration with Alliance Française, ran for six days over two weeks in August 2023, at Alliance Francaise, Iyaganku, Ibadan. It engaged 11 girls in the first week and 13 in the second, who were from three care homes in Ibadan namely; Tabitha Home, His Heritage Home and Jesus Christian Outreach. Girls Tech 1.3 focused on multimedia editing and data analysis. The project featured a series of classes multimedia editing and data analysis led by dedicated facilitators.
The participants were grouped in threes to share a computer system for practical lessons. Throughout the event, the participants had the opportunity to delve into various aspects of multimedia editing, data analysis, and graphic design. Highlights from the programme included practical sessions in multimedia editing, where the girls learned to create reels for social media, work with timelines, apply transitions, animations, and filters to videos. They were also introduced to data analysis, mastering Microsoft Excel and creating and applying formulas.
The final day of the Girls Tech 1.3 event marked a culmination of the participants' hard work. The participants were grouped for project presentations, where they showcased their newfound knowledge and skills with confidence and enthusiasm. The presentations covered topics related to data analysis and multimedia editing, with each group delivering impressive performances and confidently fielding answering questions from their facilitators. After which, certificates were awarded to both facilitators and participants to recognize their achievements, and memorable photos were taken to commemorate the event.
