A safe place to dream: Jane's story from the dorm

This report is from Jane, a student whose life has been transformed through the support of Roko 20 Academy. She now lives safely in our girls’ dormitory, a place that wouldn’t exist without your generosity. Jane’s story is a powerful reminder of how vital your support is in giving vulnerable girls the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.

"My name is Jane Nyawira. My family is headed by my mother. I have three brothers and two sisters. She is unemployed and takes on any available work. Most of the time, we went to bed hungry because my mother struggled to feed us and pay school fees. Consequently, we couldn't attend school every day.

I joined Roko 20 in grade one. Since enrolling in this school, I have improved in co-curricular activities. I participated in netball, a team sport played by seven players, and I also gained self-confidence. Thanks to Roko 20's support, my mother has been able to provide enough food for us and pay our rent after Roko 20 supported her with a business start-up. They also sometimes provide basic necessities to some families.

I appreciate Roko 20 because they don't only focus on education. They encourage learners in various ways, such as athletics, ball games, and chess, which improves critical thinking, confidence, and focus. It also allows me to explore different places my parents cannot afford to take me. My ambition is to become a heart surgeon.

I joined the chess team last year, and it has helped me gain confidence, focus on achieving specific goals, improve concentration, and enhance critical thinking. We typically wake up at 5:00 am, get dressed in our school uniforms, and by 5:30 am, we leave the dormitory to carry out our duties, such as sweeping the dormitory area and serving breakfast. Finally, at 6:00 am, those who attend schools outside of Roko 20 leave for the day.

Our matron is called Sarah Gatero. I admire her because she is caring, empathetic, understanding, encouraging, and always willing to help. Living in the dormitory has benefited me in many ways. Firstly, it has helped improve my academic performance due to the conducive learning environment. On Wednesdays, we usually have debates, which help us improve our English skills. Additionally, volunteers talk to us about different careers, which helps us identify the best career paths for ourselves.

THANK YOU, ROKO 20, FOR YOUR SUPPORT."
