This project seeks funding to sustain the girls' dormitory at our school, ensuring vulnerable girls have access to a safe living space, a quiet, conducive atmosphere for study, breakfast, lunch, and dinner and protection from abuse and neglect. We also help pave the way for their future by supporting their continued education, including secondary school fees, and offering a pathway to a brighter, more secure future.
A small but significant number of our sponsored pupils are suffering from neglect at home due mostly to poverty. This results in poor academic performance related to trauma, ill-health, lateness, and absenteeism. We find some children sleeping on the streets, others may be subject to physical and sexual abuse, some are home at night without parental care, living in houses in danger of collapsing, sleeping on mud floors in old nylon sacks, almost all are going hungry.
In January 2023 through the generosity of our supporters we raised enough money to build a dormitory housing 17 girls who were suffering from abuse, hunger, neglect and trauma. By providing a safe place to live and having their basic needs met these girls are able to concentrate only on their studies and the impact is immediate.
The girls feel safe and are cared for by a matron who provides additional tuition in the evening, guidance on time management and emotional support. Being hungry is no longer at the forefront of their minds. There are noticeable improvements in the girls' academic performance, confidence and health. The girls have reported significant improvements in their own social and emotional learning, self esteem and relationship skills.
