The goal of this micro-fundraiser is basic: We're seeking funds to design and print an impactful, informative postcard-sized handout that can be distributed at places sexual violence survivors go in great need seeking help: high school and university campuses police stations hospitals social services shelters rape crisis centers churches The more we can get the word out about the essential services MapYourVoice provides, the greater the impact we can have on people's lives.
A 2013 World Health Organization study concluded that sexual violence is "a global health problem of epidemic proportion." We estimate that more than 1.14 billion peopleworldwide are silent about being sexually violated. This accounts for roughly 18% of the world's population. The study also found that less than 13% of survivors were willing to speak up. This means the vast majority of survivors are not reaching needed protection and recovery support "street level" organizations can provide.
MapYourVoice is the missing link, designed to fill the gap between the 87% of sexual violence survivors who stay silent and the protection and support needed to reclaim life from trauma. For sexual violence survivors, speaking up is commonly understood to be the first step towards recovery. MapYourVoice provides a safe, anonymous and therapeutic place for survivors to access the healing power of voice. Then we provide easy access and encouragement to reach out to local support services.
We are on a mission to end sexual violence worldwide. Our first goal is to help 1 million survivors in 1 year. MapYourVoice provides survivors worldwide easy access to the 3 essential needs for sexual trauma recovery: safely telling, getting help, and connecting with care and understanding. Our anonymous assault report data gives law enforcement, policymakers, public health official, and more vital information for new locally-relevant solutions to prevent and combat further sexual violence.
