Through our fundraising activities and your kind donations, we've helped thousands of working children in south Quito, Ecuador. Together with ViaNinos in Germany and Switzerland we've raised more than a million Euros over the course of twenty years to support our partner organisations in Quito and Guayaquil.
Times have been particularly hard with the security situation in Quito still bad and crime rates high. Families are facing the challenges caused by the national economic downturn and struggling to make ends meet. Our colleagues at CENIT report that families have been forced to go looking for food in the trash, which is something that hasn't happened for a long time. CENIT's activities continue but they are having to navigate the difficulties of water and electricity cuts, which are happening throughout the country.
Despite these challenges, a dedicated team of staff, supported by many Ecuadorian volunteers (mainly university students) and some international volunteers, are keeping the various programmes running. For example, CENIT continue to provide a hot lunch for the children every day. Hunger is a daily occurrence for many of the children that attend CENIT's school and outreach programmes. The healthy lunch provided not only improves nutrition but also helps keep children in school and able to concentrate on their lessons.
In addition to a hot lunch, children can access health, social and psychological support as well as education and vocational training. CENIT really is a lifeline for vulnerable children.
Thank you to our colleagues at CENIT and to you, our supporters.
