Fresh Start Recovery Centre Report - Nov 14, 2022

By Rod Garossino | Director of Fund Development

For people affected by addiction, recovery means the promise of a better life and is something to celebrate. In this photo Executive Director Bruce Holstead (right) and Addictions Counsellor Ian McGregor (left) present a jersey to Pat Mandryk (centre) in celebration of the 20 year anniversary of his clean date. Pat took home his 15 year jersey and his 20 year jersey will hang in honour at Fresh Start. Many of the staff at Fresh Start Recovery Centre are in recovery themselves (Bruce and Ian, pictured above, have  been clean 25 and 27 years respectively). This lived experience gives them the ability to relate to clients from a place of deep personal experience and empathy. It is also part of the reason our staff has such passion for our work of housing, treating and supporting people affected by addiction.

Since our last report in July of 2022, we have achieved the following:

  • 130 people actively participated in the intensive 90-day Phase 1 recovery program.
  • 88 people participated in Phase 2 of our program. Phase 2 is a 100-day transitional phase that builds on the work done in the initial 90-day program.
  • 63 people participated in Phase 3 which includes living in transitional housing units or returning to community with continued access to Outreach support and involvement with Fresh Start Alumni.
  • 28 people participated in Phase 4, living in Fresh Start’s post-treatment housing.
  • Note that the Phase 2, 3 and 4 numbers include clients living in community, in the main Fresh Start facilities or in our post-treatment housing.
  • 24 people participated in our Family Healing Program that helps people who have someone in their life who is affected by addiction. The program helps people deal with the effects of their loved one’s addiction on themand learn how to live in recovery also.
