Freedom to Education Report - May 2023

By Health & Hope Freedom to Education Team | Project Leader

Freedom to Education Programme

Health & Hope is currently supporting 48 students from Myanmar who are pursuing their studies at various schools, colleges and universities overseas. All our Freedom to Education (FEP) students have done incredibly well in their studies so far with your support. Recently, a group of 19 Class 12 students successfully completed their exams and are currently awaiting their results.

Overcoming challenges

Language Barriers

The language barrier is still the biggest challenge for some 20% of our students. However, the team is planning to provide basic English skills in the first three months of the academic year which began last month. The team speaks English to the students as much as possible including in their daily devotions. Through a great deal of study and practice it is anticipated that the majority of the students will be able to speak, write and understand English after two years of study in India.

Education system

India has a world-class education system that enables students to acquire critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. By contrast, in Myanmar, the education system encourages students to memorise information without understanding what they have been taught. As a result, our students continue to face significant challenges in adapting to the new educational system.

However, after a year of study and receiving intensive basic English skills from the team, the students have developed critical thinking skills, learned to ask questions and are gradually grasping the lessons taught to them by their teachers. After school, the FEP team assists them at home.

Achievements in spite of adversity

Although most of our students have gone through hardship, stress and psychological trauma due to the current situation in Myanmar, your support has made a huge difference to all FEP students. All the students passed their examinations. Four of our FEP students ranked 1st and 2nd positions in their final exams and two students scored the highest marks in Physics and Mathematics.

80% of the students are now able to speak and understand English in their classes. Some 50% of the students have improved in communication, stress management and time management skills. Without your support, these students would potentially have joined the ethnic armed forces and the local People Defence Force (PDF).

How your giving is making a difference

Health & Hope’s Freedom to Education Programme was established in 2009. Since that time over 130 students from Myanmar have graduated from the programme. Thanks to your generosity:

  • Eligible young people are experiencing improved educational prospects.
  • Students are able to take advantage of career progression and further educational opportunities for long-term socio-economic well-being.
  • Many of the students taking part in the programme actively contribute towards long-term sustainable development in Myanmar.
  • Selected students will return to work for Health & Hope Myanmar directly working for their local communities and supporting future students.

Next steps for the Freedom to Education Programme

Thanks to your generosity, the Freedom to Education Program is continuing to fulfil its goals to support talented young people from Myanmar to pursue their career goals and aspirations. Currently, all the students are attending their regular classes and demonstrate strong commitment and dedication to their studies. It is anticipated that our students will excel in the final exam next year.

The team is currently working on the next five-year strategic plan to lift local communities out of poverty through quality education.

Thank you

The Health & Hope Education team would like to convey our heartfelt gratitude to all our supporters for opening up new opportunities, investing and believing in these young students.
