A Lifeline for the Vulnerable; Al-Mustafa's Six-Month Impact on Kidney Patients in Need

By Sarah Ahmed | Project Leader

The Al-Mustafa Dialysis Unit continues its mission to provide free, life-saving dialysis and supportive treatments to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure patients from low-income backgrounds. Dialysis serves as a lifeline for these patients, enabling them to manage their condition and improve their quality of life. This report highlights the unit’s progress, services, and impact over the past six months.

Key Achievements (September 2024 – February 2025)

Patient Registrations

  • Total Registered Patients: Fluctuated between 18–25 patients monthly, with an average of 21 patients per month.
  • New Registrations: 19 new patients were registered over six months, reflecting the growing need for free dialysis services.

  • Erythropoietin Injections: 430 injections administered to treat anemia in CKD patients.
  • Other Supportive Treatments:

    • Pharmacy Receipts: 767
    • Diagnostic Investigations: 79

Community Engagement

  • Pakistan Day Celebration (23rd March 2024): Organized an event for dialysis patients to foster community spirit and emotional support.

Challenges & Observations

  • Fluctuating Patient Numbers: Variations in monthly registrations (e.g., peak in October, dip in January) may reflect seasonal health trends or accessibility issues.
  • High Demand for Injections & Medicines: The significant number of erythropoietin injections (430) and pharmacy receipts (767) underscores the unit’s critical role in comprehensive CKD care.

Future Goals

  • Expand Capacity: Increase dialysis machines/staff to serve more patients.
  • Community Outreach: Raise awareness about CKD prevention and early detection.
  • Sustainability: Secure additional funding to maintain free services for underserved populations.

Al-Mustafa Dialysis Unit remains a vital healthcare provider for kidney failure patients who cannot afford treatment. Over the past six months, the unit has delivered 1,103 dialysis sessions430 injections, and extensive supportive care, significantly improving patients’ lives. With continued support, we aim to broaden our impact and uphold our commitment to saving lives, free of cost.
