Vision for a Brighter Future: Impact Report of the Al-Mustafa Eye Program

Transforming Lives, One Eye at a Time

The Al-Mustafa Eye Program is not just about numbers—it's about changing lives. Over the last three months, we've seen remarkable strides in restoring sight and enhancing the quality of life for countless individuals in our community.

What We Achieved Together

November Highlights:
In November, we opened our doors to 2,265 patients, providing them with personalized eye consultations. Our dedicated team performed 246 cataract surgeries. Each of these surgeries was a step towards reclaiming vision for those who had been living in darkness.

December's Dedication:
Despite the holiday rush, we remained committed. In December, 1,915 consultations took place, with 189 cataract surgeries performed. Patients left our hospital with hope and the gift of clearer sight just in time for the new year!

January Joy:
As we welcomed January, our momentum continued. We conducted 2,262 consultations and 169 surgeries. Every procedure brought smiles and relief to patients, each one a testament to our mission.

Total Impact (Nov-Jan):

6,442 Eye Consultations: Patients received expert advice, opening the door to treatment and prevention.
604 Cataract Surgeries: Each successful surgery represents a new beginning—a chance for individuals to see their loved ones' faces, the beauty around them, and the world in full colour.
143 Yag-Laser Procedures & 62 Minor Procedures: These vital treatments helped tackle various eye problems, ensuring better overall eye health.

Real Stories, Real Change

Behind every number is a story. We have patients who can now see their children play for the first time, grandparents who can read again, and young adults starting their journeys unhindered by poor vision.

By hosting free eye camps, we reached out to those who might not otherwise have access to care, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has the chance to see clearly.

Al-Mustafa Combating Preventable Blindness- 9,980 Free Surgeries at our Hospitals this Year

Al-Mustafa Welfare Society is committed to combating preventable blindness in Pakistan through its Free Cataract Surgeries project. The initiative provides free cataract surgeries and consultations to deserving patients across various camps in the country, as well as in designated hospitals that operate year-round. The project's main aim is to improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from cataract-related vision impairment.

Designated Hospitals:

The project is implemented in four key hospitals:

Al-Mustafa Hospital, Karachi
Al-Mustafa Hospital, Dhodial, Mansehra
Khairunnisa Ahmed Eye Hospital, Baldia Town, Karachi
Al-Mustafa Medical Centre, Malir, Karachi

Consultation and Surgery Services:

Throughout 2024, the project has successfully delivered the following services:

Total free cataract surgeries performed: 9,980
Total free consultations provided: 30,000+ patients for various eye-related issues

Consultants conducting free outpatient consultations (OPDs) and performing surgeries for cataract patients, helping to ensure that the facilities are accessible to those in need.

Impact of Surgeries on Beneficiaries and Families

The impact of the free cataract surgeries on the lives of the beneficiaries and their families is profound:

Restoration of Vision: Many beneficiaries who have undergone surgery have experienced a significant restoration of vision, allowing them to perform daily tasks independently. This has been life-changing for elderly patients and those who previously relied on family members for basic activities.
Enhanced Quality of Life: With restored vision, patients can engage more fully in their communities, participate in social activities, and enjoy leisure pursuits that were previously problematic due to visual impairment.
Economic Benefits: Improved vision enables beneficiaries to regain their ability to work, supporting their families financially. Many beneficiaries have reported returning to their jobs or improving their productivity after surgery.

Illuminating Lives Through Cataract Surgeries in Azad JammuKashmir

In an effort to eliminate preventable blindness and provide vital eye care services to the residents of Azad Jammu Kashmir, a series of Eye Camps were organized in various locations across the region. These camps not only aimed to offer cataract surgeries but also to spread awareness about the importance of eye care.

CHAUKI SAMANHI, AZAD JAMMU KASHMIR

The first camp was held at the Govt Boys High Secondary School in Chauki Samanhi, Bhimber from 1st to 3rd May. A total of 948 patients were examined, out of which 191 patients underwent cataract surgeries free of cost. The camp provided medical treatment and focused on creating awareness about eye care services.

KOTLI, AZAD JAMMU KASHMIR

Following the success of the first camp, a similar initiative was carried out at Sultania Eye Hospital in Kotli from the 5th to the 7th of May. This camp saw 674 patients being examined, with 186 patients benefiting from free cataract surgeries. Local support played a crucial role in the success of this camp.

RAWALAKOT, AZAD JAMMU KASHMIR

The final camp took place at Govt Boys High Secondary School in Rawalakot from 8th to 10th May, where a remarkable 3651 patients were examined. 360 cataract surgeries were performed, once again at no cost to the patients. The overwhelming response highlighted the pressing need for such services in the region.

All cataract surgeries were conducted using advanced small incision cataract surgery procedures with intraocular lens implantation. Patients received necessary post-operative care, including medications, sunglasses, and counseling for continued recovery. The high satisfaction levels among the patients further underscored the impact of these camps.

The dedicated Eye Camp team, comprising 3 Ophthalmologists and 14 technical staff, alongside local volunteers, worked tirelessly to ensure the success of these initiatives. Their commitment to serving the community and spreading awareness about eye care services has undoubtedly made a significant difference in the lives of many.

These camps not only restore vision to those in need but also shed light on the importance of accessible eye care services. The collaborative efforts of all involved have truly brought brighter visions and hope to the people of Azad Jammu Kashmir.
