The past months we have visited the Arhuaco community twice, where we focused in understanding deeply their interest and needs, their worries about the disappear of their culture and traditions, the lack of interest of young couples about the sowing rituals, ceremonies around food and the importance of drawing through weaving.
We agreed in the importance of women’s role for community development and the strengthen of it to achieve real changes in their participation on decision making. We are very happy because after 10 years of working together the local authorities, community and the indigenous government are aware about the relevance of women participating on decision making and for the preservation of their culture.
We agreed in the following actions that will start since August: train women in diverse and nutritious food preparations and natural ways of conservation, respecting their traditions. Train the families to develop a revolving fund to help women that don’t have the economic resources for the material to weave “mochilas”, and support them with seedlings and fences for their orchards. Support the encounters of counseling for young couples, and the ones of oral tradition about drawing and weaving, mainly with food for the gatherings.
