Your generous contributions are making a difference to these children’s lives
Thank you for your continued support and generosity for the street children of Kolkata, India. We are thrilled to report that to date, we have raised $2154. These funds will provide shelter, nutritious food, clothing and schooling for 60 children.
Needs of the homeless children
These children are some of the most vulnerable and affected group of children our partners, streetchildren.dk, work with daily. They endure extremely distressed and deeply neglected lives on the streets and many are exposed to violence and abuse. Many have been simply abandoned or lost their parents. These children, therefore, need constant care, somebody to talk to as well as listen to them.
Health care & child development support in school
A child psychologist has therefore been recruited at the Sealdah Station school to engage with the children and provide mental health support. In addition, a mobile health clinic also visits the school once a week to provide treatment, medication and vaccinations. These initiatives foster improved healthcare, greater trust and confidence amongst the children as well as encourage their positive development.
Learning beyond the classroom
Due to the children’s lack of awareness, these children do not know their rights to safety, security, health, and education, as well as their right not to be forced into child labour, or child marriage. So, in addition to learning about science, mathematics, English and general knowledge, they are also helped to understand their rights.
Basic Computer Skills
During the last quarter, computer classes have also been added to the children’s daily education to improve their digital skills. By teaching these children basic computer skills and digital literacy at an early stage, they will acquire the necessary skills and aptitude to progress with confidence towards higher education.
Food, shelter, education and healthcare for more children
During the coming quarter, the Sealdah station school and Activity Centre will move to a different, bigger location. This will help to care for another 50 street children. The larger facilities will also support the introduction of vocational education for many of these children who otherwise struggle with learning during regular classes. This will be provided in the form of sewing, crafting, ceramics, cooking and other workshops introduced to them via specially designed workshops based on each child’s learning level and capacity.
Please continue to support the welfare of these street children.
